The area was first known as Colorado City, then Arizona City, and finally Yuma in 1873. It was named after the Yumas, who were the original inhabitants of the area. The Yumas were a combination of the Quechan, Cocopahs, and Mohave tribes in the lower Colorado Region. It is home to CNN Anchor Lou Dobbs and Mexican-American labor/civil rights activist Cesar Chavez.
