Moreno Valley was originally occupied by the hunter-gather Native American tribe named the Shoshone. The first settlers to the area were Spanish explorers. The Tuscon-to-San Francisco route of the Overland Mail Company passed through the town as well. Moreno Valley was named after Frank E. Brown, the owner of a water company.
