In 1842 the city was incorporated and renamed from Johnston to Jacksonville in memory of President Andrew Jackson. The Marine Corps Base of Camp Lejeune is located nearby. The creation of the base caused a population explosion in Jacksonville in 1941. Today, the primary reason for migration is still the Marine Corps.
