Brea is located in southwestern California, just outside of Los Angeles. The area began as a crude oil production center in the beginning of the 1900s. The towns Olinda and Randolph were developed as residential communities for oil workers and their families. In 1911 the two towns merged and became Brea, which in Spanish means "tar." As oil production declined it was replaced with lemon and orange groves, which gradually gave way to industrial and residential development. Notable residents have included film director/producer/screenwriter James Cameron and musician James Hetfield (Metallica).
