The event's prayer was given by Pastor Jon Harris, son of the Rev. Johnny Harris, who with Mayes and Loveridge led the effort to put a statue of King on the downtown mall.

    OCEANSIDE -- A memorial service was held for former councilwoman and community leader Melba Bishop on Jan. 16. Bishop served on Oceanside City Council from 1980 to 1984, and again from 1990 to 1992. "She was active in the community," Mayor Jim Wood said. Wood said she ran all of his campaigns for mayor, and was the go-to person for questions on local issues and grassroots campaigning. She touched many people's lives. Bishop was born in Hemet in 1942, and raised in Riverside. Bishop died on Jan. 9 after a long battle with cancer.

    Anthony Michael Hidalgo, 30, was arrested Wednesday night after an investigation by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. Hidalgo was also charged with the misdemeanor of annoying a minor. According to Sheriff's Sgt. Vanessa Sloniker, the Jurupa Valley girl whose identity was withheld was crossing Mission and Rubidoux Boulevards about 4 p.m. Monday while walking home from school when the driver of a Nissan Sentra pulled up behind her and called out. "From inside his vehicle, the suspect exposed himself to the juvenile," Sloniker said.
