About: Richmond, Kentucky

The city of Richmond was named in honor of Richmond, Virginia. It is the sixth largest city in Kentucky and the second largest in the Bluegrass Region. The Eastern Kentucky State Normal School was founded in 1906 in the town of Richmond in order to train teachers. The first graduating class of 1909 only had eleven students. In 1922 the Normal School became a four year school, and in 1935 it added a graduate program. Finally, in 1965 it was renamed Eastern Kentucky University.

  • Police find man's body while investigating woman's death

    - Kentucky State Police in Richmond say they have found the body of a man while investigating the death of a woman found shot alongside a road in eastern Kentucky. Police say 44-year-old Ricky Conrad was found Sunday in a Chrysler sedan that was parked at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington. In a statement, police said 29-year-old Ellen C. Townsend, whose body was found along a rural road in Estill County, was last seen in a vehicle being driven by Conrad. Police say they found some of Townsend's property and a gun in Conrad's vehicle.

  • KSP Investigates Shooting in Madison County

    The incident occurred at approximately 1:00 pm this afternoon in front of 100 Hager Drive in Richmond, KY. The initial investigation indicates that Brian L. Ditsch, 52 years old, and James R. Pierson, 63 years old, both of Richmond, were engaged in an argument in front of 100 Hager Drive. It is alleged that James Pierson retrieved a handgun from his vehicle during the argument and shot Brian Ditsch. Ditsch was transported to the University of Kentucky Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

  • 2nd Man Arrested In Richmond Home Invasion

    Richmond police have charged a second man in connection with a home invasion that took place back in November. Devin N. Guerrero has been charged with complicity to robbery in the first degree in regards to the armed robbery of an apartment on Evansdale Avenue in Richmond. After an extensive investigation, police arrested Anthony D. Baker for robbery the following day. During the course of the follow-up investigation, it was determined that Guerrero drove Baker to the scene of the crime. Guerrero is lodged in the Madison County Detention Center.

  • Firefighters Battle Bitter Temperatures

    The frigid temperatures and biting wind stood in the way of firefighters in Madison County Thursday afternoon. Firefighters spent hours at a vacant home on Berea Road near Richmond, after neighbors noticed smoke and flames shooting through the roof. Due to the big chill, firefighters were battling the fire and the weather. Four fire departments, with 18 firefighters, worked as fast as they could. Despite some damage, firefighters saved the house. Investigators plan to go back Friday morning to determine what actually caused the fire.

    Authorities have located the vehicle allegedly driven by the man involved in a 13-year-old girl's disappearance and also filed a criminal charge against him. Walter Lee Dunn, 27, Richmond, Ky., has been charged in Wayne County Municipal Court with one count of interference with custody, a fifth-degree felony.
