About: Richmond, Kentucky

The city of Richmond was named in honor of Richmond, Virginia. It is the sixth largest city in Kentucky and the second largest in the Bluegrass Region. The Eastern Kentucky State Normal School was founded in 1906 in the town of Richmond in order to train teachers. The first graduating class of 1909 only had eleven students. In 1922 the Normal School became a four year school, and in 1935 it added a graduate program. Finally, in 1965 it was renamed Eastern Kentucky University.
