Moreno Valley was originally occupied by the hunter-gather Native American tribe named the Shoshone. The first settlers to the area were Spanish explorers. The blazed several trails, such as the Anza Trail that cuts through the land now known as Moreno Valley. Arthur Salsberry was angered by the fight among three males a month earlier and was not dissuaded by the mother of the injured Nick McKackin from responding to the attack.
