About: Lee's Summit, Missouri

Originally founded as the Town of Strother, Lee's Summit gets its name from early settler Dr. Pleasant John Graves Lea. Lea was killed in 1862 by Kansas Jayhawkers and the people of the town wanted to name it in his honor. They chose the name Lea's Summit because of the town's high elevation, but misspelled the name Lee on a boxcar that also served as the town station. The name stuck and remains till this day.
