About: Fairmont, West Virginia

The county seat for Marion County, West Virginia, is Fairmont, which is also nicknamed, "The Friendly City." Once known as "Middletown," the name "Fairmont" eventually took over, after being a contraction of "Fair Mountain." Most famously, the city is known as the first place to publically observe the very first Father's Day, on July 5, 1908. The celebration was meant to honor the 200-plus fathers lost in the Monongah Mining disaster a few months earlier. Alabama head coach Nick Saban and Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast Mary Lou Retton both called Fairmont home at times.

Two weeks after committing to stabilizing the city's longterm pension obligations by closing the current police and fire retirement plans to new members, officials returned their attention to the short-term budget issues that led to the pension discussions in the first place.
