Nasser and his brother Andris, were separated from their mother, who they never saw again. Four days after arriving at Auschwitz, the two boys, 13 and 16-years-old, were sent to a work camp at Muhldorf in Bavaria, where workers produced weapons and other war materials for the German army. There, Nasser traded a sandstone carving for pencils so he could keep a diary of the atrocities he witnessed. He weighed only 72 pounds.
